Why Do Some Learners Freeze When You Ask a Simple Question?
Imagine this: You ask your student an easy question—one they should be able to answer based on everything you’ve been working on. But instead of responding, they go silent. Their eyes dart around the room. Their breathing changes. Their hands fidget. You can almost see their confidence draining away.
What’s going on?
At that moment, your student didn’t just forget the language. They weren’t simply nervous or unprepared. What happened is that their brain activated a limbic response, sending them straight into fight, flight, or freeze mode. The part of their brain responsible for thinking, problem-solving, and retrieving information? Completely hijacked.
As language teachers, we tend to focus on cognitive challenges—grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary. But what we often overlook is the emotional roadblocks that stop our students from using what they know. And one of the biggest? Emotional triggers.
